IELTS basics
IELTS Academic tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking and gives scores from 0 to 9 in half-band steps, plus an overall band. Most universities ask for a minimum overall score and also minimum scores in each section. Results are usually valid for two years. Always check the university's own requirement, because it can be higher or lower than the typical figures below.
Typical IELTS scores
These are common ranges, not guarantees. Competitive and professional courses (law, medicine, nursing, teaching) often ask for more.
| Destination | Undergraduate | Postgraduate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK | 6.0–6.5 | 6.0–7.0 | Visa may need a UKVI-approved test or university assessment |
| USA | 6.0–7.0 | 6.5–7.5 | Top universities may ask for higher scores |
| Canada | 6.0–6.5 | 6.5–7.0 | Work permit rules may add language benchmarks |
| Australia | 6.0–6.5 | 6.0–7.0 | Health and teaching courses ask for more |
| Germany (English-taught) | 6.0–6.5 | 6.0–7.0 | German-taught courses need German tests |
| Ireland | 6.0–6.5 | 6.0–6.5 | Check each programme |
| New Zealand | 6.0 | 6.0–6.5 | Higher for nursing |
| Netherlands | 6.0–6.5 | 6.5–7.0 | Varies by programme |
IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL vs Duolingo
Most universities accept several tests. Choose the one that suits your style and is accepted by your shortlist and visa authority.
| Test | Format | Typically accepted for | Points to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Paper or computer; speaking with an examiner | Almost all countries | Most widely accepted |
| PTE Academic | Fully computer-based; AI-scored | UK, Australia, Canada, NZ, USA and others | Fast results |
| TOEFL iBT | Computer-based | Mainly USA, also Canada and others | Common for US universities |
| Duolingo English Test | Online, short | Some US, UK and Canadian universities | Not accepted everywhere or for every visa |
IELTS waivers and alternatives
Some universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter, an English-medium degree or their own English tests. Waiver rules vary by university and may differ for visa purposes, so check both. Do not assume that a waiver for admission also satisfies visa requirements.
How to prepare
- Take a diagnostic test to find your starting level
- Set a realistic study plan with 6–10 weeks of regular practice
- Practise all four skills; Writing and Speaking usually need the most feedback
- Use official practice materials and timed mock tests
- Read and listen to English daily: news, podcasts, articles
- Book your exam early so you have a retake window before deadlines
